Queensland Legislation

What the Law Requires

Queensland smoke alarm legislation requires homes to have smoke alarms that are listed below. These requirements apply to new homes, rental properties, properties being sold, and all homes in Queensland by 1 January 2027.

Photoelectric Type

All smoke alarms must be photoelectric, comply with AS 3786:2014, and be hardwired or powered by a 10-year sealed lithium battery for reliable early detection of smouldering fires.

Interconnected

All smoke alarms must be interconnected either wired or wireless so when one activates, all alarms in the home sound together.

Inside Every Bedroom

A smoke alarm must be installed inside each bedroom of the dwelling.

In Hallways Connecting Bedrooms

Alarms are required in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home.

On Every Storey

At least one smoke alarm must be installed on every level of the dwelling.

Between Bedrooms and Living Areas

If no hallway exists between bedroom areas and living areas, a smoke alarm must be installed between them.
